Do you look?

In honor of me turning another year older, and another pound heavier I'm sure, Jake and I joined the gym. So far I have done really good at getting myself up early and huffing my ass over there to walk on the treadmill. I told myself that I didn't want to get discouraged so I would start slow. I know if I start out doing too much I will just give up.

So I walk. Walking I know I can do. When I started I was lucky to walk for 20 minutes without wanting to die. Now I'm up to 1/2 an hour and I go 1.5 miles. I know it's not much but for me it's a GREAT start. Really, I'm not looking for weight loss, although I wouldn't miss the extra 15 - 20 extra pounds I've been carrying around. For me it's about being able to run with Zack and play with him without being winded.

So, for those of you who go to the gym I have a question. Do you look? I've already said that I'm not doing it to be a super star and I know that I'm starting out slow but for me, that first day I couldn't help but look around and see people leisurely strolling at 3.7 miles per hour when I was barely staying upright at 2.9 miles per hour.

Even today, I tried really hard just to focus on what I was doing and the improvements I was making but I couldn't help it. I still looked around at how people looked, were they sweating? How far had they gone, how long had they been walking like that. Are they really going 5 miles an hour? Is that possible without dying?

So that's my question of the day. For those of you who work out or have ever worked out, do you look? Do you compare yourself to others or do you just focus on what you came there to do and then leave?

Cute Zack Moment:

We are leaving the house today and I am carrying him to the car. He looks out into the field and points at the cows.

"Coooo"

(He tends to leave off the last syllable of words)

"Yes, that's good buddy. That's a cow..."

"Mmmmm"

"Yup... cow's say moo"

I swear to you this kid gets more adorable every day!!

That's awesome, Heather! You'll feel so much better and have more energy for Zack. That's such a great reason! :)

Yeah-- I am with you. I threatened Dan's life if he did not buy me that gym membership for Mathers Day. (I think that he finally got the point)

I am excited!

I look...
And I realize I suck... but not as much as I did the week before, or the week before that. At my gym, people run. I haven't even attempted that on a treadmill... I might fall off.

It's okay though... because at least I'm going!

I look but I don't compare myself to others. Remember that cardio is higher intensity and lower intensity is fat burn. So people do things for different purposes. Also remember some people just in general walk faster than others. I walk at 3.7 and my husband runs at 4.1, so there is that too.
Good luck!

I actually refuse completely to look around at what other people are doing. It only depresses me.

Good for you...they say it takes 6 wks. to form a habit. I have worked out at 5:00 a.m. almost daily for several years now -- and I actually miss it on the few days I miss. Soon, you will say the same. I love to catch the news/listen to music/and quietly analyze every butt in the place!!! Ha! And as a bonus, I've met lots of great new people!

I don't look. I've never thought about it before. I also don't look at the speed or the incline or the distance, I usually pick one of those variable courses that make you walk really fast for a while. I tend to look at the calories burned at the end. That's my motivation to watch the calories that go in during the day too!

Nope, don't look at their speed or settings..but I do look at their outfits. Need inspiration to get slimmer and get some nicer workout gear. Anyway, I walk (like in general, at the mall or on the sidewalk) like twice as fast as my totally not-fat friend who walks DAILY. Leg length has a lot to do w/it so don't worry about your settings...worry about pushing yourself to get a good workout, and set small goals that you can achieve and grow from.

WAY TO GO!!! Getting healthy is the best goal!!
